I am not going to lie to you……what a way to start a blog.
I’ll start again….I am not going to lie to you but I absolutely love sci-fi films, books, tv programmes, documentaries….well you get the picture. I have enjoyed science since I was very little and enjoy finding out how things work. In fact when mum and dad used to get a babysitter I would set traps for them including books placed above the door and an electronic burglar alarm that would go off if the circuit were broken. Even my son loves to know how things work, turning the lights on and off, helping daddy to replace batteries in his toys and he has a unhealthy obsession with things that spin particularly wind turbines.
So as you can see I love science and it’s in my genes. And I also love God and because I have faith in him then it’s only natural that it shapes my understanding of the environment around me and the universe that we are so blessed to be a part of. I do not pretend to understand every aspect of the cosmos or quantum physics or mathematics or any of the major sciences that I would need to study for a long length of time just to grasp the basics. It’s just that in my study of theology and in particular the bible I see a pattern emerging between what God has done and the way that science has interpreted it.
I am not all faith and no science or reason as many have put it.
Nor am I all science and reason whilst disregarding the existence of a higher metaphysical being that is often referred to as God.
Which God do I believe in you may ask.
Well the God that was best displayed in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. How could he be fully man and fully God well that my friend is a whole different discussion for another time?
So with all that aside I am going to reveal to you the perspective I have on God and where he is.
The Hebrew bible or what we know as the Old Testament contains a famous account of the beginning of everything. Now we could talk about the ins and outs of it all. Whether I am a fundamentalist and everything the bible says was exactly as it happens or if I think that is just a nice library of books. But that is a question for true scholars and theologians to answer.
NRSV “In the beginning when God created the heavens and he earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep…..then God said ‘Let there be light; and there was light’
This may in fact be the most quoted verse from the Bible and many of those reading these words will have heard or read this verse at some time or another. It is of course from the book of Genesis which literally means the origin or formation of something. The fact that it was written thousands of years before the enlightenment is astounding as it pretty much explains the creation and origins of the universe. I am by no means an expert in the field of science but I believe that there is a general consensus that the universe began in a “Big Bang” event whereby the universe as we know it began and continues to expand at an unbelievable rate.
Now for my view……I totally believe that the God of the Bible was the creator of that Big Bang event and that the universe may in fact be never ending. The God I believe it is eternal and by his very nature exists outside of space which he created and time which we live in.
The bible therefore for me is various accounts of God interacting with his creation in various ways. The divine incredible moment that is so highly debated and possibly misunderstood is when God sent his Son Jesus to live among us. Jesus left eternity to live as a human being; he was truly mortal and was subject to an unjust death.
Death was not the end however and he rose again holy and eternal.
Jesus instructed his disciples to wait for the 3rd member of the Trinity (The Holy Spirit) to come upon them in Jerusalem. He then left and rose up into heaven where I believe he is with his Father (God). Jesus left our restricted space and time and entered into eternity.
So to conclude I truly believe that God exists outside of space and time. He created that space and that time. He is a higher being, the Alpha (The beginning) and the Omega (The End). I can’t explain it all but if I could I guess that would make me God as only God with unlimited wisdom and knowledge can truly know why or how the universe exists.
