Seasons Vs Reasons Header

The writer of Ecclesiastes penned this famous verse.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

New International Version (NIV)

“There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens”

There are four seasons in a year, these are: spring, summer, autumn and Winter. In Cornwall all four are often present in one day. How is it that where I live on the South coast it could be truly miserable weather whereas on the North coast they are experiencing a mini heat wave?

Seasons are constantly changing, shifting, moving and in many aspects are fluid and unpredictable. Even supercomputers and hordes of the best scientists cannot predict one season from the next. In other words seasons are out of our control and all we can do is to accept that we are powerless when it comes to the elements.

Seasons don’t have to be just related to the weather cycles. I believe that seasons can also mean the circumstances that go on in our lives which really affect us. They can affect us in a positive and in a negative way. It could be the way we were spoken to by a close friend, the death of a loved one, it might be a financial ditch that we find ourselves in or a spiritual low point in our walk with God. I am sure that there are hundreds if not thousands of other seasons of life that we can find ourselves in. What matters is that we react in a positive, life bringing Godly way.

This leads me to ~ Reasons

Reasons unlike seasons are not continually changing, however they can be changed. The reasons behind why you react in a certain way to life’s problems can indeed be changed.

I decided to turn the other cheek and not to retaliate when I fell out with a work colleague, a family member or a mate. The reason behind this decision was that I want to live out the love of Christ Jesus in my life.

I decided to lash out and verbally abuse my work colleague, family member or mate. The reason behind this is that after years of being bullied I haven’t really moved on and instead of putting it behind me I lash out at others.

We cannot change the seasons of life and all the things that happen to us both good and bad.

We can however change the reasons behind how we live our lives so that we can be better equipped to face the seasons.

We do that by being “transformed by the renewing of your mind” Romans 12:2

It is my prayer that we wouldn’t be focused on the seasons of life instead we will refocus our reasons for living. Make Jesus the main reason for living in your life.
