Going Deeper With God

I recently had a weekend holiday break in Mullion of all places. Me, Becky (my wife) and Joshua (my 2 year old) left our comfortable family home in Falmouth and traveled a short distance to a Haven Holiday site to spend the weekend relaxing and enjoying the site’s fantastic facilities. There was an amusements, bowling alley, dance floor, five a side pitch, indoor soft play area and of course a fully fledged swimming pool.

Joshua was particularly excited to go swimming and was bitterly disappointed when he had to wait…..half an hour for it to open!

This was an unusual design of swimming pool as we had to walk around the edge of the pool trying our hardest to shepherd Joshua from diving headlong into the deep end. Pause (boring bit we got changed)

So once we were ready all three of us entered the water swiftly and Joshua particularly enjoying kicking and splashing around. Becky and I took in turns to hold him above the water and kept him safe. After a while a pattern emerged where he kept asking for me, his dad  to hold him up and his reasoning was thus. I took him out into the deeper waters and out of his depth. Joshua probably felt more excited not able to feel the bottom of the pool. Although this was just a normal experience for most parents I really felt God speak to me in that moment.

God is like the father who calls us out into deeper waters and we are the children who are held up out of harms reach. God keeps us safe and lifts us above the waters in his arms. It requires our faith, our willingness but ultimately God’s ability to see us step out into what is not possible in our own strength.

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand

This song of course relates to Peter stepping out onto the water and walking towards Jesus. The most popular interpretation is that he takes his eyes off of Jesus, looks at the storm and begins to sink. But get this Jesus immediately reaches his hand to Peter and lifts him up.

Matthew 14: 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him

How awesome is that?

I will leave you with the encouragement that you can always go deeper with your relationship with God and he will catch you if you ever fall. I will leave you with the bridge in the song oceans which speaks of our need to go deeper in God.

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior
